Why did I make a blog / website?

I am very glad you managed to stumble upon this blog and I hope, after you read through my posts, you will also be glad you found yourself here. I will keep this first post simple and straight forward, meaning I will cover: Why did I make a blog / website?

Gosh, why did I do this? Let’s see…

I need to market myself, don’t I?!

Sadly, a the end of ‘22, much of my GTM (go-to-market) team was impacted by one of the many tech layoffs and I was no exception. In my time off, I have been thinking up creative ways to differentiate myself as a candidate. The market is tough right now, which means it’s a great time to step up my game! Engineers or designers often have digital portfolios, which led me to think about how I might demonstrate my own expertise. While I can (and will) share screenshots, templates, and true examples of my work, I figured I could start by simply write my thoughts down.

If my objective has been to find the right next position, I need to resonate with my target audience (hiring teams) by showcasing my experience, style, and ethos. My strategy? This website. Yes, I could have become more directly active on LinkedIn, but I don’t really like heavy posting on my personal page and I also have no intention of being a social media influencer. This medium feels more authentic to how I would like to broadcast my voice and approaches, although I will promote this blog via LI posts from time to time.

Ironically, on the day I finally publish my first blog post, I verbally accepted a new position as VP of Marketing…more to come on that once it’s signed, sealed and delivered!

Broadcast truthful and actionable approaches to Marketing / Leadership

While my first answer was entirely self-motivated, this answer is not. The simple truth is I love to teach. I was once a garden teacher at a non-profit; that desire to educate and enable has never left me. I love mentoring my direct reports or mentees, but why stop there? Why not use this site as a place for people to learn real strategies to not only land a tech marketing job, but to knock it out of the park! On top of that, a wise woman once told me: “it’s not good enough for just one woman to rise the ranks. That woman needs to send the elevator back down. That is how we truly balance the scales.” I completely agree and have tried to weave that into who I am as a leader, though it is not in my nature to discern who I help.

One other reason that rolls up to this…god, I am so tired of crappy content. “Write what you know” helps us all avoid fluff pieces that waste time and lose trust.

To summarize:

My objective is to provide actionable approaches to land and excel in a tech marketing role.

My target audience includes budding marketers, exec teams who are interested in marketing, and realistically my family (although my Uncle once asked me if I was speaking a different language after I got off a work call, so their readership will likely drop off after a while, but until then…hey, mama!).

My strategy? Shocker! This blog. My promotion strategy will still include LI (LinkedIn) and maybe one day, a newsletter.

How will I measure success? I suppose I will stick to feedback for the time being. Eventually, web visitors and page views, but let’s just get this off the ground first…

Thank you for reading. I hope you learned something.

Until next time!
